I am grateful that my decades-long career in physical and health education enabled me to learn and teach many ways to be active: Aquatics, athletics, dance, martial arts, strength training, and yoga. Of all these, yoga has become the lifelong, indispensable means to cultivating a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
Upon retirement from public school teaching in 2012, I completed 500 hours’ teacher training with Spirit of the Lake Yoga (comprising Kripalu, Kriya, Ayurveda, and therapeutic content) and three years’ mentorship with Iyengar Yoga teachers Momi Jhung and William Prottengeier, becoming certified in 2015.
Since then, I am grateful for the continued learning I have received from senior Iyengar teachers Joy Laine, Chris Saudek, Jaki Nett, Mary Obendorfer, Eddy Marks, Laurie Blakeney, Bobby Clennell, Raya Uma Datta, and Abhijata Iyengar. Perhaps even greater knowledge has come from teaching over 5000 hours to a wide range of students.
There are many types of yoga, though all of them share basic tenets. Iyengar Yoga resonates with me because of its precision, discipline, and emphasis on proper, healthful biomechanics— and its insistence on instructors’ attending to and teaching every student to their capacity.
I currently hold teaching and yoga therapy certifications from:
I have a keen interest in working one-on-one with people to help them learn and use yoga asana for their individual needs, such as improving balance and range of motion, developing healthy nutritional and self-care habits, or excelling in athletic endeavors.
